OK.

I don't know how much existing data there is in your system, but 
presumably you could simply create a new UI type 10 field for the 
Contact relation and drop (remove or hide) the UI type 68 field altogether?

I can't see it being that difficult to move the existing data from the 
parent_id column to a new one. Simple SQL query would do that. (In fact 
you might not even need to that... Create your new type 10 field and 
point it at the parent_id column???

Good question. There is a fair bit of work to do that I reckon. Esp. 
with the calendar stuff...
