The original bug reporter has found the error and resolved the problem.

I solved it!

I noticed I had the json USE flag disabled in my php package. I also 
remembered that the vtiger thunderbird extension uses json for data 
representation.

So I enabled the json USE flag and rebuild php and now everything works!

I think it would be a good idea to check for json support during the 
vtiger installation so that other users don't run into this problem.

I want to thank everybody for helping me out with this bug.
