Interesting... if Lead is a Company when converting would you skip creating
Contact?
I assume not. So Contact is essential. This means make the Account
(optional) in Contact.
Have a marker to indicate if a Company or Individual.

Contacts can be categorized as Junk when they are not converted and
discarded from the CRM.

This might be possible to achieve using the Assigned To (owner)
and transfer during conversion between teams - isn't?

Lead is hidden from view once-converted (as it ends up with Contact)
So best bet is to have Leads-Contact field mapping to carry over history.

This pain is what treat Lead as Contact would avoid - all touchpoints still
preserved.
