Yes it's works. You cann use all PHP as vtiger function also.
[CUSTOMFUNCTION|getUserName|$USERID$|CUSTOMFUNCTION].
We don't know if it's "secure" to inform about it on documentation.
Our Partners know it and use it ;-)
