I don't think that will work...

This line

>  $smtp_auth = $adb->query_result($res,0,'__smtp_auth');

Sets $smtp_auth to a string.

The test further down

>   if($smtp_auth){

Will always be true unless you reset $smtp_auth back to a bool...
