So why, on line 489 of mail.php had you commented this out?

I (now) know the error is repeated above in the log but it makes it hard 
to understand when you return a null value...

Anyway - still no joy sending to their local email server. It's failing 
in the class.smtp.php Connect() function but even setting do_debug to 5 
I'm not getting seeing any further information.

I can successfully telnet to the email server from the same host as 
vtiger is on. And it was working on vtiger 5.4.0 before the upgrade.
