Thanks Joe,

I tried the low-hanging fruit (gzip, trimwhitespace) but these didn't 
make much (any) noticeable difference :-(

I'm beginning to think this is all down to the number of picklists the 
customer has added to this module (~40!).

I am starting a discussion with him now to see if we could potentially 
replace the majority of these with non-picklist type fields instead.

I tried XDebug and profiling. No one thing was a major issue by the 
looks of it. There are just hundreds of small routines called due to the 
quantity of picklists... But thanks for the cluebat, that was 
interesting to set up. I used webgrind as opposed to Kcachegrind due to 
my dislike of grabbing ~200MB of KDE dependencies to run one app... ;-)
