I don't think it is necessary. Providing you have a decent SMTP host 
that allows you to relay I don't think it makes much difference.

Not that I know of.

The biggest problem is actually with the IMAP client on vtiger not 
working when a user *sends* an email.

What it should do is to *add* a verbatim copy of the *sent* email to the 
vtiger user's "sent" folder on their IMAP client; rather than what 
vtiger does right now which is to email a copy to them which is useless 
and confusing.
