I think this is the type of thing that should go into the wiki.  What has to
happen for that to get done?

Hi Scott,

Have you tried changing the letter or leaving the corresponding string
empty?

In include/language/en_us.lang.php (or whatever language specific file
you use) look for the string:

'LBL_DELETE_BUTTON_KEY' => 'D',

and change the D to something else or leave empty.
I haven't tried this personally and I don't know if you will have to
look for the string in other files but it seems like a logical way to
proceed.
