 I think this must be due to a problem in the database with the conversion.

 I first discovered this on a straightforward migration.

 I then I installed a complete new version of 5.2.1 and made a new
 database. When I logged in, the dashboard worked fine with each widget
 completing.

 I then dropped the new database and imported the database from 5.1.0 which
 I had earlier converted from 5.1.0 to 5.2.1

 With no other changes to any files in the installation it exhibited the
 problem. I'm pretty sure that if I went back (I didn't backup the original
 installation database unfortunately) it would all work again.

 I notice that it shows the 'Home Page Dashboard widget' but not the rest.

 A speedy cure would be gratefully received.
