Comment:

Thank you for your explanations, they are most helpful. However, it does
not work as you described (with the German lang files as default
 language).
Here is a description of the faulty behavior: I created a user with the
role "sales manager" and assigned a special picklist for the lead source
at potentials to this role. I changed the lead source entry as this user
in an existing potential by using one of the newly created picklist
 entries.
Than I created a new role subordinated to the sales manager (called "sales
person") and modified the picklist for the lead source at potentials so
that the content does not have all entries as they are appear for the
"sales manager". I assigned this role to a new user and logged in. If I
look at the detail view of the sales potential that has been modified by
the sales manager the content displayed for the picklist for lead source
is empty (!!!). (And yes I can modify it with the values available for the
"sales person") There is no way for me to find out whether the sales
manager has already assigned a lead source to this potential. In
accordance to your explanation a message should be displayed that says
"Not Accessible" but that is not the case.
