</div>On another phpBB board that I'm involved with they use a CAPTCHA for new<br>
user registrations along with a couple extra registration fields. And they<br>
also resort to manual review of suspicious registrations. Have you already<br>
implemented the most popular suggestions from this thread on the phpBB<br>

Another general strategy is to use a third-party filtering service, such as<br>
Akismet or Mollom. Not sure that a mod for integrating Mollom into phpBB<br>
exists, but probably one exists for Akismet. You may need to pay something<br>
for the service, though.<br>
