We've done this in vtiger 6 and as I recall the Portal(s) themselves 
work fine. But for a good user-experience you need to customise the 
portal email function for sending login details etc. (in the Contacts 
class file), and add some kind of picklist to the Contact module so you 
can determine which portal each Contact should use.

Am not sure with vtiger 7... I believe that as of 7.1 the portal code in 
vtiger changed quite a bit. But the principle will probably be that same.
