Yes you are right. It is the reason why we have managed only Google contact in the past not Google calendar. And I is probably the reason why people didn’t use it.

we developed a complete google connector for vtiger. The main problem with myddleware, I think, it's that you have to manage N google calendar (one for every user) so in my opinion myddleware it's not the right choice to manage easly this topic.

As far as I know the contacts/calendar sync in open source vtiger is broken (at least it was the last time I tested). The guys at Its4you have a bidirectional calendar sync app (charged monthly per user). I don't know about a contacts sync module.

I also know myddleware (Stephane) recently incorporated Vtiger to their apps integration software but I don't think they have added google contacts or google calendar. It would be nice to know if they have plans for that.
