They are different very many ways, but not *entirely* different.

I believe it's this separation that makes it much harder to introduce 
the new layout/features from the Cloud; as what happened with v7. 
Because they (vtiger) have to manually port code changes, line-by-line, 
file-by-file, from the Cloud system to the OS one.

Personally (and several of my cloud customers have said this to me 
before as well) I would prefer the Cloud version to be more "stable" and 
for vtiger to have used the Open Source platform for most development 
and testing of new features etc. then only rolling these to the Cloud 
when they are stable. But having said that, the Cloud system seems to 
have stabilised quite a bit recently; apart from the UI changes of 
course ;-)

On another personal note, I *really* didn't like the v8 UI. It looked 
very childish to me and needed far to much trial and error to find stuff 
which is easily discoverable in the v7 layout. The new v9 layout looks 
to be a big improvement on that IMHO.
