I totally think the same way, native is in this case a waste of time from my point of view.
But starting anything before getting hands on the vtiger 7 layout also seems weird. In case it's not a complete mess it could be the starting point. In case it is a complete mess we could start a new client too, but the vtiger core is not ready for this from my point of view either...
It's tough but I'll happily try contribute to a html5 solution :)
