Thanks Uma

The issue was that the email opt out was stopping this field from 
filling. I would suggest this part of the system ignores email opt out 
(when using popup we can still select the email manually anyway). We use 
email opt out only to ensure automated workflow emails do not go out, we 
still want our staff to be able to send emails to contacts through the 
system.

We have now removed this check in our installation, thanks.
