Agreed. I'm not proposing Smarty + something else, I'm proposing more
consistent use of Smarty OR something else.

I disagree.  Think about Quotes DetailView.  If you could use the same
templates for the product details section, you could add additional
products to the Quotes from the DetailView and update the DOM without
leaving the page. Additionally, you have moved the cost for template
rendering off of the web server.
