I can't help but wonder if it wouldn't be better to find offending ob_start() and remove that instead.  Would you open a Trac ticket for this issue?

I had successfully saved documents to our vTiger server, and I could open them - without any issues - from the storage folder, but I could not open them using any browser. (The exception was with pdf files: They could open via folder or via browser)
If I try to open a .doc file I would get the following screen:

If I tried to open a .docx I would get:
[cid:image002.png at 01CDF583.559F8150]
[cid:image003.png at 01CDF583.559F8150]
If I tried to open a jpg I would get:
[cid:image004.png at 01CDF583.559F8150]
And same with xls, tif, mdi, mht, etc.
The solution was to modify \modules\uploads\downloadfile.php around line 45 and include 4 lines of code to clean the buffer before loading any new documents:
[cid:image005.png at 01CDF583.559F8150]
Now ALL documents are able to open just fine from the browser.
