I have run it without it, but ldap really ties it all together. There 
were some limitations, but I disabled it after using ldap at install 
time. ldap or not is a config item, but the debian packages were built 
to use ldap.

the setup asks the questions to setup slapd.  You shouldn't have to mess 
with it.
