Comment:

 This "might" be to do with the syntax the OP was using.

 I have just created a very similar field in Potentials for weighting the
 amount.

 You set the "Target field" to the field you want to display the result.
 and in the equation editor I have:

 = amount*(cf_538/100)

 This seems to be working correctly.
